What Are Cataracts?

The lens in your eye, which helps you focus, is made of water and protein. As you age, the protein can clump together, making the lens cloudy. This cloudy area is called a cataract.

A cataract needs to be removed when it affects your vision and everyday activities, like driving, reading or watching television. Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most common surgical procedures available, with 3 million surgeries performed in the United States alone each year.1
